Salt Flats

Last week after another rough night with Charlotte I was able to get her to sleep in a little bit. Once we got up I decided that we needed to get out of the house. The weather had been so nice. It shouldn't be wasted! So I called up my little sister to go out to the Salt Flats and to Donner Springs. We headed out to the west dessert. Of course there are pictures so here we go...

Some of the signs at the flats. The bottom right picture is some blimp we saw on the way out there. I think this was military land and there were these two white blimps just hovering in one spot. Pretty weird. I'm guessing it was something the military uses. The bottom middle is a random Christmas tree out in the desert. The bottom right is this random art thing in the desert. I think its called the tree of life. Something like how its supposed to represent life in the desert. Oh and another thing that I didn't get a picture of but was so totally random... Chloe and I saw this bed frame with a blow up doll tied down to it. First we were like, what the heck? then we started laughing. I have never seen anything like it in my life.

Just some pictures we took out on the flats. Some are from the flats off I80 some are from out by the speedway. Some of the salt was kinda mushy with some mud under it but the further we walked out the drier it got. It was super bright too. Blinding.

After this we wanted to go to Donner Springs. I kinda had directions to it but they weren't super clear and I haven't been able to find much online. I would have figured there would be signs. So we were supposed to take this road which I did. Then it turned into a dirt road. So we followed it... and kept going and going and going. We were like out in the middle of nowhere. It's possible we were in Nevada at some point. So eventually we come to Hastings Cutoff. Its part of the trail that the Donner Party took as well as other pioneers. So we found this:

Some historical marker. It had a map but didn't show where we were or where Donner Spring was from here. Then there are pictures of the road we had traveled and where we were gonna keep going. Seriously the middle of nowhere. There was a ranch somewhere out there. We had a couple vans and a truck pass us.

We eventually realized it was getting late and I was afraid to keep going since we had to go all the way back. I need to try and look into it more because I'd love to go back and find it. Its a really neat place out there and there are supposed to be some old Indian caves too. I want to get back there soon.... but maybe with my parent's Yukon. My little Accord probably shouldn't take that road again. It's so good at off roading though.
