So first, Wed. night my foot started to hurt really bad. Basically to where I couldn't hardly walk on it. I must have pulled something in my foot. No idea how or where I was when I did it. It just hurt really bad. Thurs. morning, still bad. But I had to clean the house and pack so I sucked it up and hobbled around doing laundry, cleaning the bathroom, vacuuming, dusting, doing dishes, etc. So most stuff was packed and we were basically ready. Except we had to get Scott's car safety inspected and registered so we could leave it with his parents since we were borrowing their truck to bring Toby's cage up.
Friday morning my foot still kills and I make sure the last min stuff is good to go... minus food. Bills were paid and all seemed well. Scott was going to do his car when he got off but I wanted to speed up the process so I swapped cars and the car seat and headed over to Big O. We had been there about and hour and a very energetic and very impatient little girl was getting quite antsy. So we went out on the grass. Then the guy comes over and tells me it won't pass the safety inspection. Say what? He said the rear brakes were on backwards. Huh.... that's funny, because the only work we had done was there at Big O within the last 3 weeks and nobody else has worked on the car in the last few years. So he doesn't say much. I don't blame him. You have to protect your techs. I've done the same at my job. You don't start blaming other people and making the company look bad. I get it. He looked up all the work done in the system and says he'll go back and talk to the mechanic. Well they were gonna do whatever they needed to bring it to meet the inspection. So I ask how long. About 45 min. Oh yes. I've been here over an hour and you expect my daughter to wait that long here. So I'm stuck at Big O not knowing what to do. I call Scott but he's so swamped and doesn't think he can leave. My mom was out visiting teaching but said my sister could come get me. So she was gonna head down and rescue me. But then Scott called back and got someone to take over and he brought a work truck down since he didn't have the keys to my car.
So Scott saves us and since we didn't have Charlotte's car seat we took the side streets and drove slow. We got my car and Scott rode in back with her just buckled in her seat belt. We got my car filled up and got some ice and went home to finish packing. We finally got a phone call more than an hour after they started on the brakes and they were done. So we went back and swapped the car seat and Scott went to get the truck while I took a very tired, frustrated and extremely fussy kid back home without her dad. She was not happy about this. She's such a daddy's girl. So she screamed and threw some terrible tantrums while I tried to pack up my car. Scott made it back and he got the truck loaded up. Then at about 2 we finally were on the road headed to Provo. Oh my goodness. I'm tired just typing this.
We got there around 3:30 and unpacked everything. Then I went to do some shopping at Costco and Winco. Got some food for meals and hit up Winco's bulk candy isle. We never buy candy so this is like our little treat while at the cabin. Works good for bribes too :) Of course the genius I am thought it would be faster to take the freeway on a Friday evening from Costco to go back north to Winco. Yeah... horrible idea. So I was gone for like almost 2 hours shopping. Utah County is ridiculous with all that road work. I had bought a lasagna to cook up not realizing it takes 2 hours to cook. So we finally had our dinner around 8:15 or something and then showered and started the struggle of getting Charlotte to sleep. That took forever and I don't remember how late it was but we were so tired it seemed crazy late. It may have only been like 10:30.
Our Saturday was supposed to start with some fresh baked monkey bread. Well the biscuits I bought were crazy big I guess. It over flowed and the sugar/butter mix was burning on the foil in the oven so the top was cooked and burning but the inside was all dough. I had to pull off the burnt stuff and try it again but had to get the foil with the stuff on it out so it'd stop smoking. Then it caught fire. I can't find any baking soda for the life of me in that kitchen. There is so much stuff crammed in the cabinets I don't know what is what. So I had to use water which was not my first choice but eventually got it out. So once my foil was out I could try again. That oven cooks really uneven. I forget how much I hate to bake in that thing. I can't even get it right. The monkey bread came out ok but I make it much better at home. So this was around 10 when we finally ate and were able to start getting dressed for the day. We took Toby on a walk then drove down the canyon to take Charlotte to a park to play that was bigger than the one by the cabin. But of course the slides were too hot so that didn't work.
We decided to try and find the Discovery Park and looked for a Walmart on the way too. We finally found both. It was getting pretty hot though so we only stayed at the park for like a half hour. Plus my foot was still killing me and it was about Charlotte's nap time so we thought we'd head back. We found Walmart to get Charlotte some of those Crayola markers that only color on the special paper. Charlotte has had her crayons taken from her due to lack of listening. She has been coloring on windows, window sills, and furniture. So the fits every time she asked for crayons were just more than I really could stand to hear so we opted for this. She can still color and not destroy everything. We also got her a magnadoodle thing. She loves that and can use it in her car seat in the car. We had a little extra money and for $25 treated ourselves to some CPK for lunch. We just called it in and picked it up then went back to the cabin to eat and try to get Charlotte down for a nap. Lunch was good. The nap was a pain. That took a couple hours but finally got her down around 3 or 3:30.
She woke up not too long after 5. Scott and I were still full from lunch so we tried to get Charlotte to eat dinner and she wasn't having it. So we got ready and were heading out because Scott's parents were going out to see his Grandma who is living in Pleasant Grove with his aunt and uncle. So we headed out but a few minutes away realized we forgot some candy we were bringing her. So I turned around and we headed back. We were kind of in a hurry and the road that goes through the development to all these cabins is basically one lane. If you meet another car someone has to pull over. So there are a ton of people that must have been coming up for something but this one car is just in the middle of the road with nobody in the car. Are you kidding me? So we're like 5 cabins away so Scott just jogs back to get what we need and I pull into someone else's driveway to get out of the way. The car finally moves and another one leaves and I can get a little closer to grab Scott. So we're trying to hurry and get out to PG when we hear this sound. It sounded like something hit my car. Scott thought a bird ran into my car or something. Then we hear this other weird sound. So I pull over and what do we see but a lovely flat tire on my right rear tire. Perfect timing.
So we start weighing our options. Scott can change a tire but we had lent our jack to people in the cabin next to us and they busted it. We never replaced it. We had just talked to Rick and he was gonna meet us in PG but if he has a jack maybe he could help. But Scott needed tools to get the spare out and we didn't have any and wasn't sure if Rick would. Or we have AAA. I call AAA and Scott calls Rick. He's coming up to see if he can help. AAA is a funny thing to call. You really need to be aware of your surrounding and know the name of the road you're on and what city or they basically can't help. This was the second time I've called. Once for my parents and man... they are OCD about location. So I do my best to describe to her and I'm just throwing names out there and she gets a basic location for us. Yahoo. So Rick gets there and they're working to get the tire out. Once they finally do I cancelled the AAA service. It had already been a half hour since I called and no word so that was good. This was faster. They get to work on stuff and a girl pulls over and asks if they need help. I told Rick he should have gotten her number. I guess she had a Honda too so maybe she had changed her tire before and saw a couple of guys and figured hey, good opportunity. Not realizing one was married with a wife and kid in the car. Smart girl though.
She left and they were doing okay then a guy pulled over and he was a mechanic and just made sure they got the tire on right. One of the bolts went on kinda funny but the guy said it'd be fine (not so, as we'd find out later). So once we were set with the donut on we headed to PG and were able to visit for a while. It was nice to see his grandma and talk with everyone. Charlotte was loving the dogs but we had to remind her they were not like Toby and she had to be very gently. She treats Toby like a pony and it doesn't bug him too much. He's so good with her. A little after 8 we figured we'd better head out. Rick was gonna come hang out for a bit up there so we all headed back. Charlotte loved having Rick there and was so sad when he left. He was reading stories to her but changing them. It was a good laugh. He colored with Charlotte too which she loved. After he left she threw a bit of a fit but was okay after a few. Scott had left too to drive him to his car in the guest parking lot so once he came back that made her happier. She slept much better that night too.
The next morning we got up earlier and were able to eat earlier. We took Toby on a walk. Then we were gonna drive down to another park before it got too hot and let Charlotte play. So we're in the car and we could see the tire was low but thought we could drive a few miles to the closest gas station and put some air in it. I backed the car up on the cement and noticed it was really really low. We tried to check the pressure and couldn't even get a read. Awesome. So we get Charlotte back out and Scott tried to use the jack to his parents truck to get the spare off. We thought he could just take it down and get air in it. Well that jack wouldn't work. Of course not. So Scott calls Rick again who comes to our rescue yet again. They get the tire off and take it to fill it up. They can only get 3 of the bolt things back on though because one was stripped on both ends. Awesome. So now the decision is try to find a place open in UT county on Sunday to repair it or risk driving home with only 3. I would not be able to exceed 55 mph the whole way home which means our 1 1/2 hr trip could easily become 2. Decisions decisions. After a couple phone calls and some advice we decide to try and get it fixed. Now who the heck is open. Oh yeah, pretty much nobody. Finally Rick gets through to Pep Boys. Sweet! So we take it down and Rick had left us to go back home.
Pep Boys says it could be just a $40 replacement or if its worse it'll basically be the cost of new brakes because they'll have to take those off. They were also gonna look at our tire and see if it could be patched. So I ask how long and they say it'll be at least 2 hours before the mechanic can even look at it. Great. So we grab the car seat not sure what's going on at this point. Maybe take a walk? I don't know. Scott calls Rick yet again and lucky for us Rick basically missed sacrament and it was a new ward he hadn't been to yet and his friends weren't going so he was just home. He came to our rescue yet again! We seriously owe him. So we went back to the cabin to eat some lunch and just wait. Charlotte of course enjoyed Rick being around again. She was so cute. She would lean her head on his shoulder while he read to her and she was even trying to give him kisses. She loved having Rick around and it gave Scott and I a little break.
2 hours passed and no word. I figured they only had the one mechanic. So 3 hours goes by and nothing. Sometime between 3 and 4 hours we try to call them and see if they've even looked at it. After a few tries I reached a guy at the store and he said he'd have the mechanic call me back. Yeah, never did. So we had dropped the car off at 11:30 am and once 3 rolled around I figured we better get Charlotte down for a nap. So I finally was able to do that. We were basically just waiting for my car so we could head home. We knew they were only open until like 6 so when its 4 pm we're getting nervous wondering if we're stuck here another night or what. They finally call. It was the cheaper of the repairs and my tire is fine and patched. I didn't really bother asking details on the phone. I was just excited to have my car done. So Scott and Rick take off. I start getting our stuff together and all set so we can leave as soon as Charlotte's up. I put a couple things in the truck and we're about set. Scott makes it back and said the whole bill was only $53. I seriously thought we'd be paying like $100 for the weekend. The wait sucked but for that price it was worth it. My tire was fine, we could drive a normal speed and get home.
Charlotte woke up a little after 5. We grabbed some McDonald's on our way out and I was able to get Charlotte to eat. She wouldn't eat much while up there. Little punk. We finally made it home around 7:15 I think. We have already decided on another trip in Oct. Conference weekend would be perfect but if not, any other works great for us. Scott might take off a Fri if possible. I don't think I can count this as a vacation. It went way too fast and was filled with a lot of stress for me. Good news is my foot is finally better. I can walk on it and there is hardly any pain. Plus most of my pregnancy nausea is gone. So at least I felt pretty good for the most part while all this stuff went on. Every time Scott and I go to the cabin we write ourselves a little note. We wanted to do that each trip so we could gather them together some time and see all the stuff we did each year. Its fun to see what's gone on. We usually have something to share each trip and this was probably the most eventful. I would be perfectly fine if next time is less eventful. I definitely want to do the Alpine Loop next time. Maybe see Cascade Springs again. It'd be really cool to do the ski lift in Sundance with all the fall colors around. Not sure how much it costs but I might look into it.
Well, I didn't really get any pictures as you might have noticed. I just never really took any. We were hardly doing anything long enough to get any and I just didn't think about it while we were sitting around waiting at the cabin. It was still nice to getaway but I think Scott and I need a second chance at this vacation. He works so hard to not have been able to enjoy it much. Speaking of which he's already worked a 9 hour shift at this point and will most likely get another 4 hours at least in. This is a busy time of year for them. The hours are great but it just about kills him and he really deserves any break he can get. Poor hubby. He does a lot for us.
Anyway, there's the long version of our trip. I'm sure we'll look back and laugh at it all and always remember how Rick rescued us multiple times this trip. So glad he lives in UT co. I'm really tired now... I think its time for lunch and naps... let's hope Charlotte is in!
