Brigham City Peach Days 2011

Another year spent at Peach Days. It was just me, my sister and dad again this year. We got up bright and early and headed up. We got there probably not too long after 10am. I totally forgot about the parade. Last year we had come later so a good hunk of Main St. was closed and parking was much harder but we scored a sweet spot in the shade right by the Box Elder Tabernacle. Which just so happens to be right across the street from the new temple being built. I was wondering where they were putting it. But I'll get to that in a min. First the parade.

So their parade is more lively than our Tooele 4th of July parade. A lot longer too. I figure they start at 9 and weren't done until almost 11:30 I think. We only watched some of it. We didn't really care much about the parade. But I did get some interesting pics. First off there was this lovely beauty parked by the parade. Sweet ghetto motor home.
But it gets better. This was put up inside.
Chloe and I got a kick out of that. We love Spongebob!
So then we also got to see the Shriners. That was pretty funny. A bunch of older guys riding around on these go kart things made to look like magic carpets. Yeah... interesting to say the least.
Oh and the weird old man clowns. You could tell these guys were having a blast being dressed up as clowns for the parade. They were pretty funny to watch. I've never seen clowns so old.
Then in case you didn't see the lady in front of us in the pinkish shirt. Here is her hair. I've seen similar styles but hers looked more like she just climbed out of bed and put a little product in her hair. Chloe was going crazy as a cosmetology student. She wanted to help her.
So we got kinda bored with the parade after like 20 min. So we ran across between floats and decided to get some pictures of the sweet new temple and walk around it. With its location it can be a great place for missionary opportunities during Peach Days each year. Here's the pics I got. Of course its still under construction. They were barely getting windows in as you'll see.
I had to lift my camera over the fence to get pics so forgive me for them being slightly crooked. I did the best I could. Oh and if you look on the roof they're doing copper! I've never noticed this on a temple before but its a very interesting addition. Also very expensive. They definitely use the best stuff. You can get pretty dang good money for copper scraps which is why people's lineset from their a/c's get ripped out sometimes. People desperate for money.

It was really neat to see this under construction. I'd love to come up whenever the open house is. Although I missed the Draper and Oquirrh Mtn one so hopefully we make more of an effort for this one even though its much farther.
After we checked that out we walked down Main while the parade was still going and started to look around. We went to our favorite place to get the best peach cobbler but also decided to try their dutch oven lunch. This is a picture of the place I took last year I think.
Seriously good food. They had this really yummy chicken breast with some kind of coating on it like its supposed to resemble fried chicken but its cooked really tender in a dutch oven. Then they have these incredible potatoes with cheese and some carrots. I've been craving them since. They also give you some good baked beans and a roll. Then there is the super incredible best peach cobbler I've ever had. They also top it off with this square of vanilla ice cream. It resembles a klondike bar minus the chocolate coating. So we enjoyed our lunch and cobbler and while we were eating the parade finally ended. Then we walked around a bit and looked at some booths. Lots of neat crafts and vendors there. But we wanted to head out and go for the gold. The good stuff. The best peaches around! So we headed back to the car and on the way noticed the cosmetology place. They had the mannequins in the window. The ones Chloe uses. Oh and she had told me about the creepy fingers they practice on for the nails. So weird looking. I took a pic.
Now I knew what she was talking about. So we got back to the car. Headed down highway 89 past Maddox (we need to eat there next year) and to the place where we get our peaches. I can't remember the name of the place. This year they sold them in boxes. $18/box. Not bad at all. We went for two boxes of Loring peaches. Last year we got Sunburst or something like that but they were only selling those in box lids and they were like $9. So we opted just for Lorings. Although we did try the Red Lady ones and those were good too. I also got a cantelope and honeydew for less than $5. Pretty cheap for their size. They were pretty good but the honeydew wasn't as sweet as I had hoped. We were going to leave then my dad remembered he saw boxes of pears for like $18 or something like that. So we went back and got some of those too. We used to buy spiced peaches and pears from a farm in Somis back in Cali. I thought it'd be a good idea to get some too. So we grabbed a box of those too. Then we headed back home.

And you might think that is where my story ends. Oh no! We decided to start canning. So I talked to Scott. He had planned to go record the BYU and Utah football games. I was going to start helping my parents on the canning process and he'd bring Charlotte down in a while while he went to start recording and then we'd have pizza at my parents. Well our canning started off slow. Not all of the peaches were quite as ripe as we had hoped so blanching them and trying to get the skins off wasn't as easy as we'd hoped. So we had to go through all the peaches and get the ripest ones and they'd have to let the others sit a day or two until they'd be easier to get the skin off. We had our spiced syrup going already so once we got them peeled the rest was quicker. My mom had already sanitized the jars. All we had to do was the lids. My mom sliced the peaches while my dad and I cooked them up and got the canner ready. Everything went pretty smooth. We didn't finish it all until about 7 or so that night. And that was only some of the peaches. My parents were going to do jam too once some peaches got riper and they still had to can the pears. They were gonna work on that stuff this week. I think they got all the jam done and maybe some more peaches. Basically we've got some good fruit for the next little while. Love the local produce.

It was a really long day and I was super exhausted but the spiced fruit is so good. It's basically a normal canning syrup with cinnamon and whole cloves. It is so good. We also got to watch the rest of the Utah/USC game and USC won. Yahoo. I thought they might. It was a close game though. And I crashed that night. But another successful trip to Brigham City. I love that this is becoming a tradition. I'm already looking forward to next year!
