Natural History Museum and Red Butte Gardens

Yesterday I thought about taking the kids to the zoo but remembered the new exhibit didn't open for another week or two so then I thought, what about the aviary? So that was the plan with my sister unless it seemed too windy then we'd hold off. There were high wind warnings that day and once we got out there it seemed a little chillier than we thought and kinda windy. So we decided to go to the Natural History Museum since it's in a new building. Its very pretty. I really like the architecture and its very open and neat to see what they've done. Its not as big as I thought it'd be but so much nicer than the old one. And I think there are more dinosaurs on exhibit than there were before. Here's the pictures I took:

After sitting in the car and then going potty when we got there, this girl was all ready to run around and be crazy.
Chloe will finally hold Jackson now. She's still kinda funny and feels awkward but I tell her not to worry. She's a funny girl.
When you first walk in you see this display to the left. It's quite impressive. So many different things to look at.
It's amazing all the dinosaur fossils they have

This one was hard to get a picture of. Its so tall!

The have a few of these smaller ones randomly suspended in the air. Kind of neat. They are so small.
This was Charlotte's favorite part. Dinosaur bones are hidden and they have paint brushes to brush away the "dirt" to find the bones.

I've always been fascinated by rocks. I don't know why but they're just really cool. Geology was always fun to learn about in science.
We were laughing at the badger. Reminded us of this random badger thing we used to watch and laugh at. Me and my sister are so odd sometimes :)
Another wall with a sweet collection. I thought this just looks so cool.
The view from the top terrace. It was kinda hazy but you can kinda see the Capitol on the right then downtown to the left.
Charlotte laying on a bench on the top terrace.
These are pictures of the '99 tornado that went through downtown. It went right by my brother's old apt which now sits across the street from the conference center. There was some damage done to the apt they had been living in. Thank goodness he wasn't there anymore! We were visiting 3 days after this happened and got to see some of the damage. My brother was living in Taylorsville at the time but was working downtown when this happened. I believe he was at lunch at the mall though and was on the other side from where the tornado went by. Crazy cool pictures!
There is a lot of neat Native American stuff since UT was home to so many Native Americans. Some really cool stuff on display.

I love the rocks and gemstones. Probably my favorite. So incredible!

A model of the museum. Pretty cool and another beautiful work to add to the east side.

After that we decided to go over to Red Butte Gardens. Scott had like no sleep the night before. We got home late and Charlotte slept horribly and he had to be in at 3am so he was lucky to have had 3 good hours of sleep. I thought it'd be nice to keep the kids away longer so he could get a nap in. Plus we were out there and the museum didn't take too long to go through and Red Butte is across the the street. Why not?

So we walked around and had fun taking pictures. The kids are here is really cool and Charlotte could have run around for quite some time but I didn't want to be there all afternoon and evening. Here's my pics from there:
They have this little splash pad-ish thing. There are 3 rattlesnake things behind Charlotte that spit water and then this fountain thing.
There is a big wire snake that vines grow over and Charlotte was climbing through some of it.
Chloe and I laughed when we saw this. We called it "death by splinters" because really? Who is going to sit on that? It looked very splintery.
This is the opening of the snake tunnel.
The giant lizards. Charlotte loved these guys. It was hard to get her to come off and look at other stuff.

 These poppies were huge!
The moose... we had a lot of fun with that moose. Charlotte was having a blast!

The have some really pretty rose gardens. This is Charlotte over by those.
There is a small waterfall there. What I love about the gardens is they have a lot of little trails that go off into these quiet areas with benches so you can sit and just relax and enjoy the beauty. This would be a good date place. Especially if you want to just talk and sit back and relax. I love these gardens. I know its not always Scott's favorite place to go but he'll usually humor me with most of the things I like to do :)

Jackson was so good and crashed.

And that was our day of fun! We're hoping to do the Tracy Aviary and the Hogle Zoo in the near future. Probably go with Chloe since Scott doesn't mind if he misses it and it gets the kids out of the house a bit!
